`OHANA to Link Mauna Kea Telescopes

January 23, 2006

An international research team including scientists of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has successfully passed the first test in a fiber-linked interferometer project `OHANA (Optical Hawaiian Array for Nanoradian Astronomy) that will use the seven largest telescopes on Mauna Kea. `OHANA will combine a telescope 800m in diameter achieving 100 times better angular resolution than the 8.2m Subaru telescope. The results of the first successful interferometric coupling experiment on 17 June 2005 between the two Keck telescopes observing 107 Her are described in the January 13th issue of Science.
