SUBARU PRIME FOCUS SPECTROGRAPH/INSTRUMENTATION RESEARCH SPECIALIST - ID# 17218.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to three (3) years in duration, with possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Hilo, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,837/Mon.


DUTIES:
Cooperatively performs commissioning of the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), a new facility instrument of the Subaru Telescope. Conducts acceptance process of PFS and develops its operation and maintenance plan. Pursues a program of astronomical research.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:
PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field.


EXPERIENCE:
At least three (3) years of experience in astronomical observations and data reduction, development and operation of optical or infrared spectrographs, and a program of research in astronomy.


ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
Knowledge of observational astronomy, visible and infrared astronomical instrumentation including optical design and alignment. Ability to plan and manage projects. Ability to undertake a program of astronomical research. Ability to work extensively in the daytime and nighttime at the Maunakea summit (at an altitude of 14,000 feet). Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.


PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to climb stairs and carry loads of up to forty (40) pounds for short distances. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with Linux software development, image processing and data analysis, mechanical and electrical design, systems design, and/or cryogenics.
