Subaru Telescope Staff Celebrates International Women and Girls in Science Day
February 12, 2020
Seven female astronomers, engineers, and administrators from Subaru Telescope visited Waiakea and Kamehameha High Schools on February 11, 2020, in commemoration of International Women and Girls in Science Day. Highlighting their own diverse cultural backgrounds, these telescope employees shared their individual journeys within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields with students. They also answered many questions posed by the students and discussed Subaru's cutting-edge work. The Subaru staff particularly encouraged young women -- often underrepresented in STEM jobs -- to pursue their passions in these professions. Carolyn Nakasone-Medeiros, Human Resources Assistant of Subaru Telescope who coordinated the school visits, said, "It's our pleasure to share our experiences at our observatory and in the field of science with the younger generation on this island."
