Effects of the Massive Power Outage at the Maunakea Summit Area (Report 3)

October 3, 2018
Last updated: July 1, 2023

When the massive power outage occurred across the Maunakea summit area on September 13, 2018 (Hawai'i Standard Time), one of the uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) that supplies power to the Subaru Telescope did not function properly. Therefore open use observations at the Subaru Telescope were cancelled starting from that day.

The telescope has become partially operational after emergency work involving the UPS. The observatory provisionally resumed open use observations on the night of October 2 using the High Dispersion Spectrograph.

Instrument exchange is still limited as the UPS is not fully recovered. The work to achieve full restoration is expected to require more time.
