Subaru Welcomes Future Astronomers

The search for the edge of the universe relies on the astronomers of the next generation. Subaru offers an opportunity for the undergraduate students in Japan to come to Hawaii and observe using the Subaru telescope. This program has been taking place once a year to gain the interest of observational astronomy among young researchers and has reached its fourth year on 2006.

In March, eight students from six universities observed the nearby galaxies to measure their redshifts and rotational speed. Prior to coming to Hawaii, students participated in an intensive preparatory course at NAOJ's Mitaka headquarters. In Hawaii, they had five days of packed learning experiences. Back in Japan, students will be presenting their results at various astronomy meetings.
