- Funding for the Japanese National Large Telescope is approved.
- Construction begins.


An experiment to determine the enclosure design
June 1992
- Construction at the summit of Mauna Kea begins.

- Processing of mechanical parts of the Subaru Telescope begins.

- Construction of the upper structure of the enclosure begins.
- Primary mirror blank is complete.
