JOB VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
- NAOJ Project Research Fellow (specially appointed by external grant) -

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) is inviting applications for a position of project research fellow specially appointed by KAKENHI (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research).


1. A position is open for a project research fellow, which is a full-time position (38h 45min working hours/week) employed under the scheme of the annual salary system of NINS. This fellow belongs to Subaru Telescope, Mitaka office.
2. The successful applicant is supposed to work on the project "The peak epoch of galaxy formation explored by a super multi-color imaging survey with 18 filters (SWIMS-18 survey)" together with the project leader, Dr. Tadayuki Kodama at NAOJ.
3. The new near-infrared instrument SWIMS is an imager and spectrograph developed by IoA, Univ. of Tokyo for their TAO project, but it will be carried in to Subaru Telescope at least for 2016-2017, and a pilot survey is expected to be conducted during this period. The main scientific objective of the project is to investigate galaxy formation and evolution during its peak epoch (primarily at 1<z<5) using the unique sets of 9 medium-band filters and 6 narrow-band filters. The appointed research fellow will be involved in the planning/preparation of the survey, execution of the observations, data reduction, data quality assessment, and the production of some early scientific results. 4. The term starts on 1 April 2015 (or later), and finishes at 31st March 2017 (no renewal). If the applicant had been any project research fellow of NAOJ before, then the term may be shortened so that their total period of employment at NAOJ does not exceed the five years limit.
5. The applicant must have a PhD degree in astronomy or related fields as of 31 March 2015, or is expected to have one by 30 September 2015.
6. The application documents (either in Japanese or in English) must include (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a summary of research activities in the past, (3) a list of publications (Separated to refereed and non-refereed papers. For co-authored papers, specify the location of your name from the head of the author list.), (4) PDF copy of three (or less) major publications, and (5) an outline of research plans. In addition, the applicant should arrange one or two reference letters, to be sent directly from the introducers to the address below. The names of the introducers should be identified in the application cover letter.
7. The application documents and the reference letters must arrive at NAOJ by 12:00 JST (or 03:00 UT), 21 November 2014, either by post or by E-mail.

9. When the application documents are received, a confirmation mail will be sent to the applicant/introducers. If the applicant/introducers do not receive the confirmation, please notify at the inquiry address.
10. The fellow will receive a monthly salary of 300,000 JYE plus compensation for commuting expenses. The travel and relocation costs to NAOJ will be covered, subject to the travel regulations of NINS (the details have to be arranged with the administration office).
