HYPER SUPRIME-CAM RESEARCH FELLOW – ID# 14081

Subaru Telescope, NAOJ. Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (three (3) years in duration, with possible extension of two (2) additional years), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.


DUTIES: Participates in the operations of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) including Strategic Survey Program (SSP) observations, maintenance, and data verification. Pursues independent astronomical research.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD or ABD or equivalent from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field.


EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in astronomical observations and data reduction, development of optical and/or infrared instruments, and research in astronomy.


ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge in astronomy, astronomical instrumentation, and computer programming. Ability to undertake independent program in astronomical research. Good written and oral communication skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission, and must have driving experience of at least one (1) year.


PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.


POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, incumbent will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and as applicable subject to University of Hawaii's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in astronomical instrumentation including design, hardware and software development, and maintenance. Experience with image processing and data analysis. Communication skills in additional languages other than English.
