SUBARU SENIOR INSTRUMENTATION/RESEARCH SPECIALIST - ID# 13689.

Subaru Telescope Project, NAOJ. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,620/Mon.


DUTIES: Performs modifications and maintenance on the commissioned facility instruments of the Subaru Telescope to improve their reliability and performance. Takes a leading role in upgrades for the instruments and new instrument projects. Pursues a program of instrumentation research.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field.


EXPERIENCE: At least five (5) years of experience in instrument operations at an 8-10 meter class telescope, including astronomical observations and data reduction, development and operation of optical or infrared instruments, and a program of research in astronomy.


ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of observational astronomy, multiple object spectrographs, optical or infrared detectors and spectrograph optics and alignment. Ability to undertake a program of instrumentation research. Ability to plan and manage projects. Good written and oral communication and documentation skills in English. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.


PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to climb stairs and carry loads of up to forty (40) pounds for short distances. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of Linux software development, image processing and data analysis, optical design and mechanical design, systems design, and cryogenics. Experience in instrumentation project management. Proficiency in the Japanese language including speaking, reading, and writing.
