ADAPTIVE OPTICS SCIENTIST – ID# 10272.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (approximately three (3) years in duration with possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics Project, the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,620/Mon.

DUTIES: The Adaptive Optics Scientist will participate in the development of Subaru laser guide star adaptive optics system. In charge of optical design/fabrication or developing a diagnostics system for the adaptive optics system. Pursuit of independent science research related adaptive optics is expected.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: More than three (3+) years experience in astronomy or physics as a professional researcher.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILL:Knowledge of adaptive optics. Ability to undertake independent program in astronomy or physics research. Good written and oral communication skills in English: Possess a valid driver’s license and able to operate four wheel drive vehicles.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must pass a high altitude physical examination and work at a high altitude (14,000 feet).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in astronomical instrumentation including design, hardware and software development. Knowledge of physical optics. Experience in optical design.
